About Our Organization

Kenya Network of Women with AIDS (KENWA) is a grassroots community based organization, which was founded in 1993 by women living with HIV/AIDS who were rejected by their families due to their HIV status.

At the time it served as a meeting group for experience sharing and consolation. KENWA gained NGO status in 1998 with a membership of 32 HIV positive women. Currently the organization has a membership of over 10,000 women living with HIV/AIDS and over 5,000 orphaned and vulnerable children.

KENWA’s overall goal is to improve the living conditions of women living with HIV / AIDS and their children, as well as to enhance societal responsibility for their welfare.

KENWA, by virtue of being an organization that was founded by women, has a positive bias towards women driven initiatives. This is mainly due to the fact that women are usually the most marginalized in the community, yet they bear the largest brunt of the HIV pandemic. This is as a result of the low economic status that women hold in society which leads them to engage in risky sexual behaviors to provide for their families. Due to the passion that KENWA has for children and the understanding of their plight and vulnerabilities, KENWA implements programs that are geared towards the improvement of the quality and standards of their lives. These programs not only give hope to the children but also offer practical support as well.

Over the years, KENWA has successfully implemented various programs in informal settlements, both in rural and urban areas to meet its goal. Activities are usually implemented through a decentralized system of community drop-in centre’s of which KENWA currently as 7. Presently KENWA has six main programmatic areas: Advocacy and Lobbying, Care and Support for Orphans and Vulnerable Children, Medical and clinical support/care, Water Hygiene and sanitation programs, TB control and prevention programs, Mental Health programs, governance program through devolved system of government.tual e-tailers.
